‘FAR AWAY’ by CARYL CHURCHILL
CONCEPTUAL DESIGN BY JORDAN RODRIGUEZ, 2025
CATAWBA THEATRE AT UNC SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
Far Away is a story of ignorance, as each character demonstrates a lack of awareness of the horrors in their world, much like the real one. The space I have created for Far Away is one embedded with the replaying memory of the events of the show, on display as the play goes on. Both locations, the house and the hat factory, actively have the characters of its respective act the entire show. The elements of dystopian society & war presented are reoccurring in our real lives and history, and are represented as thus, as well as the locations of the set looking aged and worn from the replaying events of Far Away in the space, as if it has been playing for all of time. The audience has the choice of regular or immersive seating, in which the horrifying hat parade will encircle them as they march.
